The History of D. Longo & Son
ALCO Pump & Tank
History of ALCO: Angelo Longo, Don's father, started a company that delivered coal to local homes and establishments in the 1930's, and continued through WWII. When the War broke out, he lost all his employees when they were conscripted into service. Thankfully, they all returned home safely. As a coal provider, he would travel out to Wilkes-Barre, PA with his twin 8-cylinder Packard tandem coal truck, get loaded to the top of the side boards, and return back to East Orange over the mountains and along the winding highways. This was before the interstates were built and it was an all day journey. After the War, he naturally incorporated fuel oil into his offerings to his customers, and the petroleum service was a huge success. His brother, Tony, was a contractor building service station buildings. ALCO naturally evolved into handling the installation of the petroleum tank fields, related piping systems, configuring the pump islands, and even installing the hydraulic automotive lifts in the service bays.
Don worked with Alco Pump & Tank Co. in East Orange as a young boy learning the trade from his father. His 'official' employment began in 1953.

His quality workmanship expanded the business to car dealerships, bus and transportation garages and DPW locations. He incorporated as Don Longo, Inc. in 1980.
